FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Passive fire protection (PFP) is a term used for solutions that prevent or minimise fire spread by segregating void spaces within ceilings, walls and floors.

Passive fire protection helps to maintain structural integrity for building users to evacuate safely and provide critical time for fire-fighting measures to be as effective as possible.

As a leading UK manufacturer of passive fire protection solutions, including cavity fire barriers, penetration seals and fire rated access hatches, Firehalt offers a range of products which comply with UK Building Regulations that guarantee safety, integrity and reliability.

Yes. All Firehalt fire barriers meet or exceed the minimum requirements for cavity fire barriers as set out in the Building Regulations: Approved Document B. This ensures that concealed spaces are protected against the penetration of smoke or flame.

Cavity barriers, tested from each side separately, should provide a minimum of both of the following:

  • 30 minutes’ fire barrier integrity
  • 15 minutes’ fire barrier insulation

Firehalt’s multi-layer smoke and flame fire barriers, provide up to 120 minutes integrity, tested to BS476 (Parts 20/22), with up to 60 minutes of insulation.

This exceeds the minimum requirements of the Building Regulations and provides added reassurance to specifiers and installers.

Cavity fire barriers are used to divide any cavity or void within vertical and horizontal applications (including roof spaces) to prevent smoke and flame from spreading through concealed spaces or cavities within buildings such as healthcare facilities, industrial warehouses, retail outlets and commercial buildings.

Within the fabric of a building there is always a potential for fire and smoke to spread through concealed cavities which act as ‘open chimneys’. Firehalt fire barriers are designed to compartmentalise larger concealed spaces and voids within a building, effectively limiting the spread of fire and smoke.

These multi-layer smoke and flame barriers offer vital protection during a fire, maintaining up to 120 minutes of fire integrity.

Penetration seals are a critical component of passive fire protection and fire safety management. Without them the integrity of a buildings fire safety precautions can be compromised.

Preventing the spread of fire via service pipes, cable trays or ventilation ducts penetration seals work in conjunction with our range of cavity fire barriers and fire rated access hatches to assist in passive fire protection.

Firehalt’s range of penetration seals maintain the fire resistance around these areas for up to 120 minutes.

Please note: Firehalt high temperature textile penetration seals are designed for use with Firehalt fire barriers only.

Fireproof access hatches are designed to create a passage through fire and smoke barriers while preserving their integrity when not in use.

Installed in roof voids, lofts, ceilings and walls fire rated access hatches offer safe, reliable access for maintenance and tradespeople to areas which are separated by Firehalt fire barriers.

This ensures no damage to the fire barrier while maintaining fire protection and the integrity of the building.

Firehalt fire rated Access Hatches are supplied pre-covered with the appropriate Firehalt fire barrier and provide up to 120 minutes fire integrity.
